Zen teacher Furyu Schroeder gave a talk on wayfaring vs. navigating. Navigating implies something like a GPS with step by step directions. Wayfaring is how the Pacific Islands made their way to the distance islands of the Pacific — working with the wind, stars, currents, and chance. Going through life involves too much complexity and ambiguity to navigate — we must be wayfarers.
