Tony De Mello tells the story of a man who met God and was granted three wishes. The man had an old wife who he felt was rather cranky, so first he wished that she would disappear. She did.

And after a few weeks the man felt bad and he felt a strange longing for her. So he went to God and said I wish to have her back. And she came back.

Now, knowing he only had one wish left he waited to try and think of what to wish for… His friends told him he should wish for endless money. Others said to wish for eternal youth. Finally after years of indecision he went to God and said “God, in your infinite wisdom and power and I’d like to ask you for your advice. How should I use the third wish you granted me?”.

And God replied - If you’re a wise man, you will wish to be happy no matter what happens to you.

1C1. What we really want is happiness…

1C2. How happy am I?
