It is hard to say what is the “one thing” that matters most for happiness. But relationship quality or social connection may be the most important piece. The Grant Study from Harvard University is the longest ever psychological study of adult health and happiness. Researchers found that quality (not necessarily quantity) of relationships was the only significant factor in determining how happy you are and how long you live.
